Frequently asked.
Short answers about prices, stores, and your account. For the full walkthrough, see How it works.
The basics
What is DishBudget?
A recipe planner that prices every meal at your own grocery store. Pick a Kroger-family store and each of our 42 budget recipes shows what it costs there today, per serving and in total, using real products from that store's shelf.
Is it free?
Yes. DishBudget is free to use, and so is the account.
Why do I need an account?
You can browse and search every recipe without one, and 6 of them are open in full so you can try it out. A free account unlocks everything else:
- All 42 recipes, each with its full shopping list, step-by-step method, store-brand swaps, and Send to cart.
- Live prices from the store you pick. Without an account, you see typical estimated prices.
- Plan, which turns a week of dinners into one combined shopping list.
- Pantry, where you save the staples you keep on hand so every recipe leaves them out.
- Favorites, cooking history, and reviews.
What does the lock on a recipe mean?
That recipe is for members. Without an account, you can see its photo, estimated price, cooking time, and description. Signing in, which is free, unlocks the shopping list, the step-by-step method, and tools like swaps, Send to cart, and printing. Recipes without a lock are open to everyone.
Are you affiliated with Kroger?
No. DishBudget is independent. We use Kroger's public product data to show prices, but Kroger doesn't own, run, or endorse DishBudget.
Stores and prices
Which stores work?
Any Kroger-family store, including Kroger, Fry's, Ralphs, King Soopers, Smith's, Fred Meyer, QFC, Harris Teeter, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Mariano's, Pick 'n Save, Metro Market, Baker's, Gerbes, Foods Co, Jay C, Pay Less, and Ruler. Enter your ZIP code or share your location, then pick your store from the list.
Where do the prices come from?
From Kroger's product catalog for the exact store you picked: the regular price, any sale price, and whether it's in stock. We refresh prices every 15 minutes or so. Items sold by weight, like onions and ground beef, are priced for the amount the recipe actually uses, not rounded up to a full pound.
Why is the price at checkout different?
Prices can change between our last refresh and your trip. Digital coupons, loyalty pricing, and your store's own rounding can also make a difference, and sometimes our product match isn't the one you'd grab. Treat DishBudget's numbers as a close estimate for planning. The store's price is the one you pay.
Where does the nutrition info come from?
From the nutrition facts labels of the actual Kroger products each ingredient is priced with, scaled to the amount the recipe uses and divided by its servings. A few items without a label, mostly spices, use standard USDA values. It's an estimate: it leaves out optional toppings and salt you add to taste, and it doesn't change when you swap to a different brand. Everyone can see it, no account needed.
What does a store-brand swap do?
When a store-brand product does the same job for less, we point it out on the recipe. One tap swaps it in, and every total on the page updates.
Can I order my groceries through DishBudget?
Not directly. The “Send to” button opens each product on your store's website, one at a time, and you add it to your cart there. You check out with the store as usual. We never see your payment details or your order.
Planning and cooking
How does the meal plan work?
Tap the calendar button on any recipe to add it to your plan at the number of servings you picked. Plan combines everything into one shopping list. Shared ingredients are merged, your pantry staples are skipped, and you can tick items off as you shop. You can mark each dinner cooked as you go.
What's the pantry for?
Save the things you always have, like oil, salt, and spices, once. Every recipe and plan leaves them out of the total, so the price you see is what you actually need to buy. You can still untick other items on a single recipe.
Can I print a recipe or shopping list?
Yes. Recipe pages and your plan both have print-friendly layouts, so you can print them or save them as a PDF.
Your account and data
Do you sell my data?
No. We don't sell your personal information. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what we store and why.
Who can see my reviews?
Reviews are public. They show your first name and last initial. Your favorites, pantry, plan, and cooking history are private to you.
How do I delete my account?
Email adamcarrillo@gmail.com from the address on your account, and we'll delete your account and everything saved with it.
